Fear of Food: A Different Side of Eating Disorders

It may seem like an irrational fear, but to the individuals afflicted with type of eating disorder, it is 100% real, rational (in their minds), and terrifying.

Imagine if one of the main fuels your body needs to go on living, was the one thing that frightened you the most. You can imagine how this fear would completely uproot your life and leave you feeling helpless and confused.

This fear can strike a myriad of different types of people. Often times it can strike those who are severely underweight, as well as those who are overweight. The fear can stem from the individual being afraid of gaining weight from eating the food, but they can also just have a strong anxiety when faced with the prospect of eating the food. In this second example, the individual will often start having panic attacks and will completely lose any appetite.

In both cases, the problem is psychologically-rooted and must be dealt with through therapy. Often there are secondary issues along with the eating disorder that must both be dealt with to cure the overall problem. With multiple diagnoses, the best option for treatment is through a dual diagnosis residential treatment program.

There is a growing number of treatment centers around the country that deal specifically with treating eating disorders. New Dawn Treatment Center is an accredited eating disorder center in California staffed with medical and nutritional professionals who can help deal with many types of eating disorders and leaded those suffering from them to a healthier way of living.

If you or someone around you is suffering from an eating disorder, you can find more information about the disease and options for treatment and recovery vial New Dawn's official website:

Overeating In America

Overeating in America seems to be an epidemic. Restaurants serve too much food, parents yell at their kids when they don't eat their full plate, grocery stores sell gigantic amounts of junk, fast food places are always pushing for the BIGGER size: "Would you like to super size that for only a dollar more?"...

No wonder so many people are overweight, health problems related to weight are at an all time high and children and teenagers have emotional problems with food.

What are we, as a country, going to do about this epidemic?

Lasting Welness

I found this great article about Cliffside's opinions about Eating Disorder Treatment:

Find An Eating Disorder Center Dedicated To Lasting Wellness

'An eating disorder is a resilient disease. By the same token, eating disorder treatment must be a sustained process. The most successful eating disorder center is the one that helps its clients develop the strength and skills they'll need over the long run. In the end, there's no better way to build a foundation for meaningful recovery.

Those principles, in turn, are the bedrock of Cliffside Malibu's treatment philosophy....(more)'
